Myth 1
Don't change Auditor unless absolutely necessary
New Auditor is more expensive than your existing auditor as he require more time to understand your operation.
Fact
As everyone knows, calculation of auditor fee is based on time spent by audit staff.
The more time the auditor spent, the higher will be the charge.
In theory, after the first year audit, your "existing" auditor should have a good knowledge of your operation and less time is required to do the audit work.
Less time means Less Audit fee.
However, I would like to ask: Have your auditor deducted their audit fee after Year 1?
May be, you can check with your friends whether anyone have ever got a reduction in audit fee ?
It is true that the auditor has reduced his labour cost after familising your system but only a few of them are willing to pass the savings back to their clients.
On the contary, do you notice that your audit bill increases every year?
Myth 2
Auditors referred by friends have lower audit fee and higher quality.
Fact
In general, it is true to get service provider with good reputation.
If you are choosing a restaurant, a hotel, beauty clinque ..
your friend's recommendation is always the best. However, it does
not applied to the case of choosing auditor.
As what I have mentioned before, most auditors raise their
audit fee every year. If your friend has a working relationship with
his auditor over 3 years, the audit fee that your friend paying at the moment
is already well above the market price.
Do you think that your friend's auditor will quote you a market price
which is well below what you friend is paying at the moment?
On the other hand, unlike other service business,"quality" is not a key issue
in auditing. All auditors are members of Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants
which monitors the standard of its fellow practising auditors closely.
